PRCI - Pipeline Research Council International(PRCI), American Gas Association (AGA) and the PODS Association recently teamed up to improve pipeline sensor location accuracy through the introduction of the PODS SCADA Link Module. PRCI's participation in the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Project MEAS-2-01 Pipeline Safety: Gas Pipeline Leak Detection and Repair looked to PODS to build out SCADA Link for advancements in innovative leak detection technologies, enabling more efficient and accurate monitoring systems.

Built with the #PODSCommunity, PRCI Team lead by Gary Choquette, the AGA GIS and Control Room Committees, SME's such as Russel Treat and Byron Coy P.E., SL includes physical ties to sensor locations along a pipeline system, such that the volume factors for line pack calculations can be automated via a Unique ID that links back to SCADA.
This new module connects the location of pipeline measurement sensors directly to GIS data, streamlining operations for pipeline operators.
Key Benefits:
Improved Audit Compliance: Ensure sensor points and panels are correctly identified and located per API RP 1168.
- PODS holds the identified locations of each sensor and panel, as well as the unique SCADA Identifier. Assuring that the transducers are not only indicated correctly in SCADA, but at an identifiable location.
Calibrate Flow Against Pipe Attributes: Align SCADA readings with pipe attributes like wall thickness and diameter for better accuracy to calculate hydraulic modeling.
- SCADA operators can link SCADA data with pipe attributes for hydraulic modeling, pipeline inventory calculations, and computational pipeline monitoring leak detection systems. SCADA operators will be able to pull pipe attributes into SCADA, and verify the wall thickness, diameter etc., against the flow readings they are receiving from the sensors. Operators can achieve a moderate flow against the Pipeline if floors are present.
Route Optimization: Create efficient inspection routes for field teams to access sensor locations for inspections and maintenance.
- Implement route optimization for the pipeline in the field.
Track Sensor Inspections: Document survey in PODS using inspection/ assessment range/activity record.
- Survey and keep track of sensor inspection data with the same naming systems, which is beneficial for cross referencing.
Data Standardization: Use standardized nomenclature for seamless system integration and futureproofing.
- Standardizing data into PODS presents the opportunity to use AA11 type naming conventions and use the same unique ID system. Most operators are looking for an opportunity to standardize across systems and for future merger and acquisition situations.
The SCADA Link module empowers operators to enhance efficiency, boost compliance, and streamline data management.
Purpose:
The purpose of the SCADA Link module is to create a repository in PODS to capture the location of hydraulic pressure sensors on the pipe, as well as the location of the panel that collects sensor information. When performing computational pipeline modeling (CPM) or calculating lost and unaccounted (LUF), knowing exactly where the pipeline measurement sensors are physically connected to the pipeline is critically important to model accuracy. To help facilitate this link, PRCI and the PODS Association have collaborated to add additional data tables to provide this data link.
- The SCADA Link module focuses on managing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data related to the hydraulics of the pipeline. Approximately 10% of SCADA sensors are hydraulic sensors used to monitor the flow of the product. While this module can accommodate all SCADA sensors using the feature classes defined blow, implementing such coverage is optional.
- Each feature class in the SCADA Link module (SENSOR_POINT, SENSOR_PANEL) enhances the ability to locate and maintain field instruments and associated equipment. This includes ensuring ease of access for servicing Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), sensors, and other connected components.
